Description

Ovarian Cancer

Every 24 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In Oregon and Washington combined, there are about 800 new cases yearly. These loving individuals are our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, wives, and friends.
Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers and the fifth leading cause of cancer in women. The vast majority (85%) of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer are diagnosed in stages III and IV; just 46% of these women live beyond five years.

Call to Action: Teal Ribbon Fun Walk

In light of these dismal statistics, we must do more to raise awareness about ovarian cancer. Toward this goal, OCAOSW is hosting the 2nd Annual Teal Ribbon Fun Walk, scheduled for June 22, 2024. There is no screening test for ovarian cancer, and knowledge can be essential to early detection. Survival rates improve with an early-stage diagnosis, so people should know the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.
This 1.5-mile walk around the Oregon Zoo allows families, survivors, friends, and supporters to unite for a common cause.

Goals

  • Promote education and awareness about ovarian cancer
  • Unite our local ovarian cancer community, including survivors, friends, families, medical professionals, and advocates, for a common goal
  • Raise funds for OCAOSW - donate here

Trust Your Gut - Awareness & Knowledge: Your Secret Weapon

Kathie Luecker was just 54 when diagnosed with ovarian cancer; she died one year later at 55. In 2015, the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Oregon and SW Washington received a bequest from the estate of Katherine Z. Luecker. The Trust Your Gut superhero campaign was created with funds from Kathie’s generous and meaningful gift and in concert with her wish for increased awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer.

We are committed to carrying out Kathie's wish of increasing public awareness about the symptoms of ovarian cancer through well-coordinated initiatives such as Trimet Advertising, paid social media ads, indoor advertising, television/radio commercials and interviews, press releases, reusable grocery bags, and bookmarks.

Our latest effort is the Teal Ribbon Fun Walk, which we invite you to join us on June 22. Let's come together to raise awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms, support survivors, and pay tribute to Kathie and all the other remarkable women who we’ve lost.
