Race Rules

Long Race Rules (direction of turns will be subject to race day conditions)

  • Racer meeting at 8:30am at Stage Area
  • Start time: 9:00am. All racers be in the water ready to go by 8:45am.
  • 14’s first, followed by 12.6’ and under, a couple minutes later.
  • Cash Prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd (Must have 5 or more signed up in class)
  • Display your racer bib (Must be worn for timer)
  • Portable flotation device (PFD) and board leash are mandatory
  • Race starts toward open end of the basin, turn left at the Rusty Pelican, pass under Rickenbacker Bridge and round Virginia Key. Ignore marks in basin, they are for Short and Novice Race. 
  • Round Island to left. Once you pass the North side of Virginia Key, you will see white “Do Not Enter” buoys. Keep them on your left. Pass around the large mark buoy about 1 mile NW of Virginia Key almost to Port of Miami South Channel. 
  • Again, you must round large mark (buoy) 1 Mile NW of Virginia Key, then it’s a straight shot to the Marine Stadium basin, and a direct shot to finish line marks.
  • Leave board at shoreline with race staff, carry paddle on land through the finish line arch. 
  • Again, don’t get disqualified for missing the large mark buoy. There will be a Committee Boat and Marine Patrol overseeing this area.
  • No drafting out of class – i.e. No 14’ drafting 12.6’, male drafting female etc. (5 minute penalty per incident)
  • No more than 5 strokes on knees (2 minute penalty per incident) 
  • Hazards: Watch out for the rocks at the points around the basin, the bridge shoreline, as well as possible fisherman lines on the bridge.
  • Race with Aloha!

Outrigger Race Rules

  • Racer meeting at 8:30am at Stage Area
  • Start time: 9:10am (After Long Race start). Be in the water ready to go by 8:55am.
  • Stay clear of Start Line until after Short Race has departed
  • Display your racer bib - must be worn for timer
  • Portable Flotation Device (PFD) is mandatory
  • Race starts toward the open end of the basin, turn left at the Rusty Pelican and round Virginia Key. Ignore marks in basin, they are for the Short Race.
  • Round Island to left. Once passing the North side of Virginia Key, you will see white “Do Not Enter” buoys. Keep them on your left. Pass around the large mark about 1.5 miles NW of Virginia Key almost to Port of Miami South Channel. Continue toward Miami River, round Brickell Key to left, return to Marine Stadium finish line.
  • Don’t get disqualified for missing the NE Buoy
  • Shallows are off limits. There will be a Committee Boat and Marine Patrol overseeing this area.
  • Hazards: Watch out for the rocks at the points around the basin, the bridge shoreline, as well as possible fisherman lines off the bridge.
  • Move out of finish line area to South (closed end of the basin) once you finished.
  • Race with Aloha!

Short Race Rules

  • Racer meeting at 8:30am at Stage Area
  • Start Time: 9:20am (After Outrigger Canoe Race start). Be in the water ready to go by 8:50am, stay to area South of start line.                                  
  • 14’s first, followed by 12.6 and under, a couple minutes later
  • Display your racer bib (must be worn for timer)
  • Portable flotation device (PFD) and board leash are mandatory
  • Air Horn - Race starts towards basin open end, keep marks on your right.  The course is clockwise and you will pass around the mark North of the small island (outside of the basin) at the open end, then back into basin, again keeping all marks to your right.  
  • Leave board at shoreline with race staff, carry paddle on land through the finish line arch. Elite Racers will soon be arriving to complete their race at the finish area.
  • Don’t get disqualified for not rounding the island mark North of the basin, keeping all marks to your right. There will be a Committee Boat and Marine Patrol overseeing this area.
  • No drafting out of class – i.e. 14 drafting 12.6’, male drafting female etc. (5 minute penalty)
  • No more than 5 stokes on knees. (2 minute penalty per incident)
  • Race with Aloha!

Novice Race Rules

  • Racer meeting at 10:00am at Stage Area
  • Start Time: 10:30am (After Paddle Clinic). Be in the water ready to go by 10:20am, stay to area South of start line.
  • 14’s first, followed by 12.6 and under, a couple minutes later.
  • Display your racer bib (Must be worn for timer)
  • Portable flotation device (PFD) and board leash are mandatory
  • Air Horn - Race starts toward basin closed end, keep marks on your left. The course is counter-clockwise. 
  • Leave board at shoreline with race staff, carry paddle on land through the finish line arch.
  • Don’t get disqualified for missing any of the three marks. There will be a Committee Boat and Marine Patrol overseeing this area.
  • No drafting out of class – i.e. 14 drafting 12.6’, male drafting female etc. (5 minute penalty)
  • No more than 5 stokes on knees. (2 minute penalty per incident)
  • Race with Aloha!

Corporate Challenge Rules

  • Racer meeting at 11:45am. Assemble on Concrete Walkway by Finish Line
  • 12:00pm Corporate Challenge “Inflate the Board” Race 
  • Boards will be located next to team name sign.
  • Remove board from bag, attach fin, assemble paddle, attach pump.
  • At the whistle, “Inflate the Board” Race Starts, each teammate must pump for at least 1 minute until 12 PSI is reached.
  • First team to hit 12 PSI yell out.. you win! (To be verified by Committee)
  • 1st place prize for each team member of Winning Inflate the Board Race. Top 5 teams will receive top pole positions for relay race.
  • 12:15pm OBPC Corporate Challenge Buoy Relay Race 
  • Teams move with board to beach start zone
  • Each racer will complete buoy race, land on beach, run through Orange Bowl Blow Up Obstacle with Football.
  • As each racer reaches the beach, a teammate will move the board back to the beach start zone, ready for the next racer.
  • Once a racer has completed the obstacle, they will run with football and hand it to the next racer whom will in turn complete the buoy race and obstacle.
  • Repeat until all 4 racers have completed the buoy course, obstacle with football and the final racer will run through the finish line arch.
  • Winning team will be awarded OBPC Corporate Challenge Trophies!
