Abigail Haynes was born in 2012. Just shy of her first birthday, she was diagnosed with Venous Malformations in her face, mouth, and head.  This is a rare vascular malformation that affects less than 1 percent of the population. Venous Malformations are caused by deformities of veins that have very thin walls and slow blood flow, causing benign tumors to form and grow rapidly.  To date, Abi has had 21 surgeries performed by Dr. Wayne Yakes in Denver CO. Dr. Yakes destroys the affected blood vessels by injecting ethanol into them. He is the only doctor in the world who performs these procedures and although there is no cure for this disease, this is the closest thing there is to one. We have seen success in the reduction of malformations, but she has a very long road ahead of her.  Abigail’s Angels Virtual 5k was started in 2013 to raise money to help get Abi to her initial treatment in NYC . This year we are proud to partner with the Kolbe Fund!

We met the Kolbe Fund’s founder Kate Schnittman on a chance bike ride in Chester County, PA. The Kolbe Fund was started in 2013 after Kate’s own son Max was diagnosed at age 4 with a pituitary brain tumor.  She and her husband Aaron lived through the challenges of traveling for the best treatment available, giving them the inspiration to start The Kolbe Fund. Simply put: The Kolbe Fund helps families who have to travel for medical treatment, paying for hotel lodging, parking, and other associated expenses.  We know that for families with sick children, priorities must be rearranged so that healthcare becomes the parents’ primary concern.  There is no distance too far or remedy unfit to ponder if there is the hope or promise of a cure.  The Kolbe Fund was created to empower all families to seek out the finest care – regardless of their financial situation.

Currently, the Kolbe Fund is helping to ensure that Abi always has a place to stay when she travels to Denver for surgeries.  Now,  we also want to be able to pay that forward, not only helping Abi but also by helping other children like Abi get the best treatment possible!
